Dutch investors are well served: DEGIRO is a domestic broker with some of the lowest dealing costs in Europe, and the major euro neobrokers all accept Dutch residents. Almost none charges a percentage custody fee, so the comparison comes down to per-order costs, currency conversion and — a detail specific to the Netherlands — the annual exchange connectivity charge DEGIRO levies for each foreign exchange you trade on. The bigger cost for many Dutch investors is not the broker at all but Box 3 tax, which is charged on the value of your assets rather than on what you earn from them.

Box 3 (vermogensrendementsheffing)

The Netherlands has no tax-free investment account comparable to an ISA. Instead, investments sit in Box 3 and are taxed on an assumed return applied to your net assets above a tax-free threshold, rather than on your realised gains. The system has been repeatedly revised following Supreme Court rulings, and both the assumed return and the threshold are set annually, so check the current figures with the Belastingdienst before you plan around them. The practical consequence for broker choice is straightforward: because the tax is levied on assets rather than income, every euro of avoidable broker cost is a euro of capital that the tax will be charged on next year too.

Regulation and protection in the Netherlands

Platforms serving Dutch investors are supervised by the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). Securities are held separately from a broker's own assets, so they remain yours if the firm fails. Cash held at a Dutch bank is covered by the deposit guarantee scheme up to €100,000 per person per institution. Brokers based elsewhere in the EU operate under their home regulator and its own investor compensation scheme.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which broker is cheapest for Dutch investors?

For most buy-and-hold ETF investors, DEGIRO and Trade Republic are the cheapest realistic options: roughly €1 per order, no percentage custody fee and free withdrawals. DEGIRO's Core Selection ETFs cut dealing costs further, though its per-exchange connectivity fee counts against it if you trade on several foreign markets. Interactive Brokers wins for anyone converting significant sums into dollars, because its 0.03% FX charge is far below the 0.25% to 0.5% the neobrokers charge.

Does the broker I choose affect my Box 3 tax?

Not directly — Box 3 is charged on the value of your assets regardless of where you hold them. Indirectly it matters a great deal: broker fees reduce your capital, and lower capital compounds into a smaller portfolio year after year. Dutch brokers also report your holdings to the Belastingdienst so your tax return is pre-filled, which foreign brokers do not.

Is DEGIRO still Dutch?

DEGIRO is headquartered in Amsterdam and is part of the German group flatexDEGIRO. Dutch clients are served under EU regulation with securities held separately from the firm's own assets. It remains the most widely used broker in the Netherlands.
